YG has taken Nipsey Hussle’s advice from “Last Time That I Checc’d” and followed it, taking control of his music and career as he nears his final album under his Def Jam deal, I Got. Issues. He’s also going strong, blowing the budget on singles like “Toxic,” “Alone” and “Run,” especially the latter, as he told HipHopDX during a recent album listening session in Los Angeles.
“I spend a lot of money on videos,” he said. In fact, for “Run” he admitted that he spent, “like, helped out a million out of my own pocket. And I’m mad because I thought the song was going to be a big hit, and it’s not. I wasted my money.” However, he said there was one consolation: “They say millionaires invest hundreds of thousands in themselves and billionaires invest millions in themselves,” he mused. “I’m at the point where I’m putting millions into myself, so I should be a billionaire one of these days.”
As the man put it, “‘Scared Money’ doesn’t make money.” If his investment in himself pays off the way he hopes, we might be looking back and marveling at his foresight.
I have problems comes out September 30 via Def Jam.
