Virat Kohli’s decision to resign from the T20I captaincy is quite surprising, says Shardul Thakur

Shardul Thakur has stated that Virat Kohli’s decision to resign as captain of the T20I of India surprised him. Thakur, who was part of the Test series in England, also acknowledged that he loves to play under Kohli’s captaincy as he supports and motivates all players on the team to perform well on the field.

Virat Kohli confirmed on Thursday 16 September that he will step down as captain of India’s T20I after the T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Kohli cited the pressure of leading the team in all three formats as one of the main reasons behind the decision. The 32-year-old assured that he will continue to lead India in the other two formats of the game.

Speaking about Kohli’s decision, bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur stated that he was surprised with the decision and wished Kohli had continued as the patron of the T20I after the 2021 T20 World Cup as well. Furthermore, he stated that he would like to congratulate Kohli on his time as captain of the T20I, but not before the final of the T20 World Cup that the 29-year-old is confident of winning.

“It is quite surprising. I wish he had continued (also as captain after the T20 World Cup), but he has done the work for India since the last few years. So, according to him, maybe it’s time to move on as captain of India T20. I haven’t had a chance to speak to him. I would like to congratulate him on his time as the captain of India T20, but only after we win this World Cup. Until then, he remains our captain, ”Thakur told TOI.

Thakur was part of the India team that toured England for a five-game tryout series. Thakur had a great start and performed brilliantly in crucial situations with both the bat and the ball. In the Oval Test that India won and took a 2-1 lead, Thakur reached fifty in the two innings of the match. Including Joe Root’s all-important terrain, Thakur also handled three scalps at very crucial junctures.

Thakur stated that he loves to play under Kohli’s captaincy as he supports and encourages the team’s players to perform well.

“My relationship with him is very good. We often joke about many things. Sometimes I try to pull his leg too, but only if he’s in the mood. After all, there are many things you need to handle. I like to play under his captaincy. We go through different moods on the field. He has been a great support and always motivates us to perform to the best of our potential, ”he added.
