ROYALTON, Vt. (AP) – A message from a Vermont teenager in a bottle who traveled more than 3,200 kilometers to the Azores, a small Portuguese archipelago, has received a response.
Sean Smith, now 16, sent a message in a bottle in 2018 on Thanksgiving with his family in Rhode Island, the Reported Valley News.
Smith left an email address in a note in case the bottle was ever found.
Three years later, the message was found by Christian Santos, a Boston-born Portuguese teenager. Santos said he often picks up trash that floats on water out of respect for the environment. He took out the bottle of Powerade and followed the instructions to send a message to the email address, the newspaper said.
Forgetting that he even sent the bottle as a child, Smith also forgot the email password. Smith discovered that Santos found his bottle through a Facebook post made by Christian’s mother, Molly Santos.
The teens met at Zoom for the first time on Thursday, the newspaper said.
Smith said the two plan to stay connected.
