Xbox boss Phil Spencer and more from Microsoft sit with GQ Magazine to talk about Xbox ahead of the 20th anniversary of Microsoft’s console. That pivotal moment in history was when Microsoft bought Bethesda in 2020. Since that acquisition, fans have been wondering about the console’s exclusivity. While Spencer initially dodged the question, he confirmed in March that the purchase was only to bring Bethesda games into Game Pass.
Some PlayStation fans, however, are giving hope for the next game in The Elder Scrolls series as most Bethesda products launch across multiple platforms. Skyrim has also been selling consistently on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC since its debut. But Spencer put the final nail in the coffin during his interview with GQ. Like Starfield, Spencer said he saw the same for The Elder Scrolls VI.
GamesBeat previously reported that Microsoft is considering every option for the Bethesda game, but it goes with Xbox Game Pass exclusivity because it best serves its purpose.
With exclusivity finalized, Elder Scrolls director Todd Howard talks about living in the shadow of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
“OKAY – [Skyrim] is something you have to deal with,” Howard said. “But then you realize, like, The Elder Scrolls VI has to be the ‘game of the decade.’ How do you make a game where you get into it, like, ‘people have to play it for a decade?’”
Skyrim turned 10 years old earlier this month, and it’s a game that continues to attract a large number of players.
The ability to modify Skyrim is a big factor in that longevity. Most versions of Game Pass from the Bethesda catalog support mods. So Microsoft has announced more powerful mod support for Game Pass on PC in the future.
