The United States crushes China and wins the Women’s Basketball World Cup for the 11th time

A’ja Wilson chipped in 19 points as the all-conquering United States crushed China 83-61 to win its fourth consecutive women’s basketball World Cup and 11th overall in Sydney on Saturday.

Kelsey Plum added 17 points and Jewell Loyd 11 as the Chinese were outplayed by a formidable team that stretched their unbeaten streak in the competition to 30 games.

The USA entered halftime with a 43-33 lead and nothing stopped them in front of 15,895 fans at the Sydney SuperDome, the largest crowd for a women’s basketball game in Australia.

Facing Chinese basketball legend Yao Ming, the odds were very high against China, who were led by Li Yueru with 19 points and took home their first medal since 1994.

In addition to being 10-time champions, the US was coming off a record 83-43 semi-final win against Canada, the biggest victory in a World Cup, and had beaten China 77-66 in the pool. phase.

The Chinese had also lost all seven previous World Cup clashes with the American giant, and by an average of 22 points.

They were again without star player and leading points scorer Li Meng, who has a fever, but Li Yueru and Wang Siyu scored early points as China started strongly.

But the USA soon found their way to close out the first quarter with an 18-13 lead, albeit a tough one with the Americans shooting just 44 percent.

They began to find the rim as they picked up the pace and built a 13-point lead, before Jin Weina scored outside the arc at the siren to take it back to 43-33 at halftime.

Refreshed, the ruthless US switched gears in the third frame with an aggressive defense and turned it into a 68-47 lead heading into the homestretch, where a ragged China had nothing else in the tank.

Earlier, Lauren Jackson produced a classic performance to end her international career on a high, 25 years after making her debut, when Australia edged Canada 95-65 to win bronze.

The 41-year-old Jackson turned back the clock with a great all-around effort, finishing with a game-high 30 points, seven rebounds and a game-high assist.

The seven-time WNBA star finished her fifth World Cup, and first in 12 years, tied for the all-time leader in games played, with 43 with Brazil’s Janeth Arcain.
