It was a great effort, but the Cleveland Browns suffer a loss in Week 1 for the 17th consecutive year.
Even if the Cleveland Browns remain one of the best teams in the AFC, they have yet to solve the puzzle that comes with winning a Week 1 game.
For a while, we thought Cleveland was going to end the streak. The Browns held a sizable lead over the Kansas City Chiefs, in Arrowhead of all places, but collapsed in the second half to lose heartbreakingly. While they have 16 more chances to prove they belong to the top of the NFL, Cleveland must prove 0-1 for an unprecedented 17th straight loss now.
If Patrick Mahomes hadn’t been the best soccer player in the second half, it could be over.
The Cleveland Browns still can’t win a Week 1 game for their life
It’s true that no one outside of Ohio really thought the Browns were going to go to Arrowhead and walk away with a win. It’s not a disdain for Cleveland, but rather the reality that the Chiefs are the reigning two-time AFC champions. For now, the Chiefs have the head-to-head tiebreaker between these two AFC contenders. Cleveland has now lost consecutive games to Kansas City.
If the Chiefs really have the Browns’ number, so be it. It wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. However, one might think that in some strange year the Browns would have won a Week 1 game since John Kerry ran for president. Although the Browns have lost more than their share since returning to the league in 1999, this absurd losing streak from Week 1 continues …
Maybe next year will be the year the Browns can start the season with a W in the win column.
