Sharpton blasts opponents of New York Mayor Adams’ anti-crime agenda

The Rev. Al Sharpton used his annual Thanksgiving speech Thursday to push Mayor Adams’ public safety agenda and blast his critics as “liberal latte.”

Speaking at his National Action Network headquarters in Harlem, Sharpton praised Adams for focusing his mayoralty on combating crime and police misconduct in the NYPD.

“We want our community to be safe from both the police and bad burglars, and we’ll support the mayor on that,” Sharpton said during his group’s Thanksgiving luncheon as Adams joined him on stage.

Sharpton argued that the mayor’s two-tiered approach is a “civil rights” issue.

“We are going to fight together against crime in the city and against those policemen who are being excessive. It is not one or the other. People are hurting people in our community, robbing people, it’s a violation of civil rights, just as much as the police,” he said.

Referring to left-wing Democrats skeptical of some of Adams’ crime-fighting policies, Sharpton said:

“You know what I call them, these people who get all these expensive drinks: latte liberals. They do not speak for us. People on the ground need to be protected both ways, and there is nothing progressive about looking the other way.”

Also on stage with Sharpton for the Thanksgiving speech were Comptroller Brad Lander and Council President Adrienne Adams, who have increasingly clashed with the mayor in recent months over public safety and other issues.

Chairman Adams, who is not related to the mayor, earlier this week criticized his latest round of budget cuts at city agencies as “baffling” and raised concerns, in particular, about his decision to largely waive to the NYPD to buckle up. initiative.

“I am of the opinion that all agencies are equal,” the speaker told the Daily News on Tuesday, “so in my opinion all agencies should be designed, analyzed and acted accordingly.”

In her own remarks at Sharpton’s holiday luncheon, Speaker Adams avoided hot topics, saying she was “grateful” to share the stage with the mayor. Lander remained equally cordial, saying it was “very nice” to join the mayor and speaker for the event.

The mayor, who began his Thanksgiving with a breakfast for the families of first responders killed or injured in the line of duty, told the National Action Network headquarters that he planned to visit Rikers Island later that day to share a meal. with an inmate who recently gave birth behind bars.

“I’m going to sit down and eat with her, since she’s incarcerated right now. And I’m going to talk to those corrections and those inside,” she said.

He continued: “The real message today for young people who are incarcerated is: ‘Where you are is not who you are.’ When we go to homeless shelters today, we tell them, ‘Where you are is not who you are. When we visit people who are in terrible places, we want people to know that ‘Where you are is not who you are.’

Following his comments, Sharpton and elected officials served Thanksgiving meals to local residents.

The mayor did not answer questions during the event, and Sharpton cheerfully warned reporters that they could not participate in the holiday party if they tried to ask a question.

“The press always has some unpleasant question for the mayor,” he said. “Someone has a nasty question for him: you can ask him, but don’t eat my food after that.”
