Punjab Congressional Crisis Live: Captain Amarainder Singh has been asked to step down as Punjab’s chief minister after months of infighting in the party. Congress has called a meeting of its legislative party at which the MLA can elect their new leader. The meeting will take place at 5 pm. Previously, more than 50 legislators from the Punjab Congress wrote to the party’s chairwoman, Sonia Gandhi, requesting that Amarinder Singh be replaced as prime minister. The Congress party sent Punjab, led by Harish Rawat and Ajay Maken, to Chandigarh as observers. According to PTI, Amarinder Singh had previously called and also learned that he had spoken to Gandhi and expressed his distress at his repeated humiliation. Sidhu has been at odds with Amarinder Singh since he resigned from the Punjab cabinet as minister in 2019. In recent months, he had been more vocal about his views.
Former head of the Punjab Congress, Sunil Jakhar, said today: “Congratulations to Sh Rahul Gandhi for adopting the Alexandrian solution to this Punjabi version of the Gordian knot. Surprisingly, this bold leadership decision to resolve the mess in Punjab’s Congress has not only captivated the congressional workers, it has sent chills down the spines of Akalis. “Amarinder Singh’s bete-noire and PCC chairman, Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is considering the prime minister’s post, is not on the likely list for the prime minister’s replacement.
