Protesters Furious Over Supreme Court Decision To Overturn Roe V Wade

In a 6-3 majority conservative decision, the court overturned its 1973 opinion in roe v. calf and upheld Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban. That will give states, primarily in the South and Midwest, the ability to ban the medical procedure, forcing people to travel long distances to places where it’s still legal. For many, however, that is prohibitively expensive.

Demonstrations were also planned in major US metropolitan areas on Friday night, including in Los Angeles and New York, where hundreds of people gathered in Washington Square Park.

Lizz Winstead, the co-creator of the daily program and now an abortion rights activist who runs Abortion AF, said Friday was “the worst day of my life.”

“It doesn’t affect me, now I use my uterus as storage,” she said while demonstrating in the park. “It affects me because it affects other people. I am a human being in the world. I have had abortions. I’m privileged. I’m here because I’m not of reproductive age, which means I get to work hard with organizations that are funding abortions as we speak.”

Others in the crowd included Anna, Linda, Constance, and Becca.

“It’s not just about me,” Anna said. “This is about all the women who will suffer and the people who will die.”

“My first thought was, ‘I can never leave New York anymore,'” Constance added. “We have family in Georgia and cousins elsewhere who want us all to be together, and now I’m like, yeah, no.”
