Normani’s relationship with beauty goes back a long way. From dance contests to appearing on the X Factor at Fifth Harmony, the singer has been in and out of glamorous chairs since she was 15 years old. But if you ask her about her most important memory of her beauty, she quickly recalls her memories of her childhood, sitting for hours while her mother combed her hair.
This beauty ritual has given her a nostalgic soft spot for edge control. “I feel complete when I’ve gone downhill,” she says. glamor. “That was a big deal when I was young. When my mom did my hair, I knew it was done when the edges were being put in.”
To this day, the singer loves using edge control and has been a long-time fan of Tresemmé’s formulas, making her new partnership with the haircare brand a no-brainer. “I grew up using Tresemmé products, so working with a brand that I’ve used and love is a dream,” she says. “The overall message of this campaign is something that I really identify with. As I continue to evolve and grow, I find it very important to surround myself with others who accept me as an individual and can be on that journey.”
For another round of Big Beauty Questions, Normani spoke with glamor about the first makeup product she ever used, her new favorite lip gloss, and her obsession with laminated eyebrows.
glamor: What’s one beauty trend you’re obsessed with right now?
I really love having my brows laminate and just brush them.
What is a beauty rule that you think is BS?
Feeling like we have to adjust for the sake of beauty standards. In terms of the fashion industry, we’re becoming more inclusive so everyone can feel celebrated and everyone feels like they have a voice in the space and oftentimes they can be themselves.
Fill in the blank: I love my hair when ______.
I take off my braids. I really love the curls, it creates a natural curl, especially right now because I have these micro braids, so it’s going to be very wavy when I’m done taking it off. I really love my long hair and my afro.
Do you remember the first beauty product you used?
NYX lip gloss because I didn’t really start wearing makeup until I started dancing competitions and the X factor when I was 15.
You can only use three products for the rest of your life. What are they and why?
Definitely edge control, for sure. Lip gloss, I really like Dior Lip Oil and Tresemme Rich Moisture Shampoo.
What is your favorite way to take a moment for yourself?
I have my self-care Sundays. I’m very introverted at heart and I’m around people most of the time, so I don’t really have time to be myself, so I like those moments. I love to dine alone. I love getting massages, pilates and every time I get all my beauty stuff done.
What is your perfume power and why?
I am a creature of habit, but I am trying to build my perfume collection. I use Miss Dior perfume as my everyday perfume. The boys really like that scent!
If you could change one thing about the perception of beauty on social media, what would it be?
Social media can be harmful because I have to take a step back because I found myself anxious. You are constantly comparing a version of yourself with another person who chose to share with you. This is probably what they look like 30 percent of the time versus most of the time.
