More Targaryen lore House of the Dragon could explore

It may be too soon to think about what HBO will do house of the dragon It could potentially go beyond the story in question and the event in the making, but the rich history of House Targaryen is no doubt tempting countless fans of George RR Martin’s work of fantasy to speculate on the exciting possibilities that lie ahead. are coming. Some of that speculation is even more justified, as co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik said. entertainment weekly in July that house of the dragon could play through the timeline of the Targaryen lore.

The succession war build-up that the show is currently building on is known as the Dance of Dragons, but the name of the series is certainly convenient enough to move further forward or backward while staying under the same umbrella. Thus, among the Targaryen stories documented and referenced in Martin’s Fire and Blood — its upcoming direct sequel, and beyond, there’s certainly no lack of source material to make house of the dragon a long-running one-off anthology series.

The conquest

has been referenced in both game of Thrones other house of the dragon, as Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros is what paved the way for this inherited family’s dynasty. Known as the Conqueror, Aegon I is the world of A song of ice and fireThe mythical figure of God to indirectly configure much of the events of this epic dark fantasy, Targaryen or not.

In a surprise twist house of the dragon added a new layer of intrigue that, at least not yet, hasn’t been made clear in the source material. In episode 1, King Viserys tells his daughter Rhaenyra that the glory of conquest was not the only motivator behind Aegon’s Conquest, but a Dragon Dream, visions certain Targaryens may have, of the Long Night that would eventually threaten the world at game of Thrones. This secret, known as Aegon’s Song of Ice and Fire, would only be passed down from monarch to monarch.

For such a historical and important figure in Martin’s source material when it comes to worldbuilding, it would be hard not to be excited at the prospect of seeing house of the dragon adapt his story in case it becomes an anthology series. Arguably, it could have been better if the show was planned as an anthology from the start and if Aegon I was the focal point of the first season.

Keeping the nature of Aegon’s Dragondream a secret until Viserys tells his daughter would have been a huge reveal for Season 2. However, since so many of the more fantastical parts of Targaryen lore are in the past, it would arguably still be great television in a future season.

However, beyond Aegon himself, there is even more potential for the transition into the lives of him, Visenya, and the children of Rhaenys I. Maegor the Cruel – as mentioned in house of the dragon – would be another compelling villain.

Certainly on the fantasy front this would also be a great way to glimpse the splendor of Old Valyria and give excuses to see more of the dragons that make the Targaryens so special in the first place. Specifically, it would be quite a sight to finally see a CG-animated Balerion the Black Dread on screen after both thrones sample mocked the towering skull of the magical beast in Red Keep.

Arguably, however, the only possible detriment to this would be to reveal too much of Aegon and spoil some of the inherent mysticism around his character by showing too much. But, as with most things, the good taste in adapting elements of the source material and the skillful creative hands could do his story justice.

Where It All Began: The Rise and Fall of Old Valyria

Another option would be to go back even further, even before the days of Aegon the Conqueror. As with so many tempting pieces of game of Thrones In lore, the days of royal decay in Old Valyria have also been teased, but have never been realized on screen.

And as King Viserys himself said in house of the dragon, the days of Valyria when it was in its heyday will never be repeated again. Still, going back to him for at least a generation of House Targaryen bloodline would be an exciting way to inject as much fantasy into this fantasy series as possible.

This age in Targaryen history could also warrant more than one season in a similar vein to the current preparation of the Dance, only in this case, it would culminate in the Fatal Fate of Valyria and how Daenys Targaryen envisioned it herself. The Doom is what saw Valyria engulfed in a fire that not even dragons could survive, and Daenys’ vision is what saved House Targaryen from becoming extinct with the other Dragonlord houses of her homeland.

It would be even more of an “origin story” than what house of the dragon it is presented as, before Aegon built a dynasty when he colonized Westeros, the Targaryens were just one of many similar families, and not even the strongest of them.

Moving forward after the Dance also has more than enough material to draw on and adapt, from the eventual war against Dorne, Aegon IV’s corrupt rule, and more. Perhaps even more poetically, house of the dragon could conclude with Robert’s rebellion only 17 years before the events of game of Thrones Regardless of where showrunner Ryan Condal chooses to take the series, turning it into an anthology series poses a tantalizing prospect of being bigger and more creative than it already is.

The first six episodes of HBO house of the dragon are available on both HBO and HBO Max, with new episodes premiering on Sundays.
