Wonderful‘s It has become one of the biggest blockbusters of the pandemic. Riding a wave of critical price and buzz about its martial arts fight scenes, it has grossed more than $ 160 million worldwide in theaters in its first week on the big screens since September 3. A big factor in that success was the movie’s streaming strategy to … not stream at all.
Unlike other movies Disney released during the pandemic, Shang-Chi was not available to stream. Disney Plus. Although it surely helped reinforce Shang-chiAt the box office, the strategy limits the options for fans who got used to watching movies the same day or for anyone. as the delta variant fuels a resurgence of COVID-19.
Is Shang-Chi broadcasting on Disney Plus?
No. It was only available in theaters on September 3.
The theatrical exclusive is a big change from DisneyIt is the new normal during the pandemic. As theaters closed or reduced their capacity, it became a means for the company to make films available to a wider audience, especially as the number of delayed films increased.
Some Disney movies – typically mid-budget live-action movies and their latest Pixar movies Luca and Soul – skipped theaters entirely and were available for streaming. Disney Plus at no additional cost. For major movies, Disney Plus introduced its Premier Access model to sell streaming access to new movies on the big screen. Disney Plus members could stream new movies at home for a fee of $ 30 in addition to the subscription price, a model called Premier Access. Disney has released five movies in this way, notably Wonderful‘s Black widow in July.
Then, as vaccines expanded, Disney reintroduced plans for theatrical exclusives. The first film to hit theaters in this way was Free Guy, a video game comedy from Disney’s 20th-century studios. It opened in theaters on August 13, with a 45-day commitment to be available in theaters only.
Inside the mess of all those factors Shang-chi drilled in theaters last week. It was the first Wonderful film released only in theaters since Sony’s Spider-Man: Far from Home was released in July 2019.
When is the Shang-Chi release date on Disney Plus?
Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings It is expected to land on Disney Plus to stream in mid-October, likely at no additional cost to subscribers.
Yet Disney has repeatedly said that it values flexibility above all else when deciding how to release movies during the pandemic. The company has yet to give full confirmation on exactly how Shang-Chi will launch on Disney Plus, so those expectations may change.
Shang-Chi is committed to being in theaters exclusively for at least 45 days. At that time, in mid-October, the movie is expected to hit Disney Plus. If Disney sticks to a precisely 45-day theatrical window, it would be Monday, October. 18. That’s much faster than Disney motion pictures would reach the streaming service before the pandemic, when they typically took five to eight months to start streaming.
And Shang-Chi is expected to air on Disney Plus at no additional cost, largely because Disney Plus has never charged a fee for anything on its service except for a new movie. Every other $ 30 Premier Access release has been a movie available in theaters and on Disney Plus the same day.
But again, these expectations are subject to change. The Disney CEO indicated this launch plan for Shang-Chi in mid-August. At the time, he emphasized the company’s commitment to a theatrical exclusive for Shang-Chi, but was less specific about what happens after 45 days in theaters. He indicated that Disney Plus was Shang-Chi’s destination after the 45-day window, while reiterating that the company wants to remain flexible.
What’s going to happen when the next Marvel movie, Eternals, comes out in November?
Disney has yet to confirm a release date for Eternals, which is a star-studded Marvel movie slated to hit theaters on November 5. But here’s what we know and some guesswork on what to expect.
- Disney plans for Eternals to be in theaters exclusively for at least 45 days when it first comes out on November 5.
- Disney Plus will be the only service Eternals will (eventually) stream when it becomes available for streaming, but we don’t have any real guidance on when Eternals will stream on Disney Plus. It may arrive at Disney Plus immediately after the 45-day theatrical window, or it may take longer as Eternals launches first as an online rental and in other formats.
- Shang-Chi’s airtime can be a strong indicator of how Disney will approach Eternals’ streaming launch plan. Shang-Chi is currently expected to hit Disney Plus immediately after its 45-day run in theaters, likely available to subscribers at no additional cost, but that may change.
Eternals’ arrival on Disney Plus could come 45 days after its theatrical release, or it could take many months. Before the pandemic, new Disney movies would come tobetween five and eight months after its release in theaters. If Disney reverts to that standard, Disney Plus subscribers may be waiting until the summer of 2022 to begin streaming Eternals.
We won’t know for sure until Disney confirms a streaming plan. And it won’t confirm an Eternals broadcast plan until Disney can see how Shang-Chi fares, both in theaters and on Disney Plus.
