I recently looked again Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It mostly stuck, except for Lucasfilm’s attempt to bring Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia and Peter Cushing’s Grand Moff Tarkin back to the big screen using CGI. That’s something that only bothered me a little bit the first time I saw it.
But Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light and Magic may now have the ability to make those movies a bit more future-proof, because it hired a YouTuber who specializes in Star Wars and other big-budget movies, showcasing his CGI aging techniques. . Shamook is the one who “fixed” Luke Skywalker’s cameo in The mandalorian for a sum of 1.9 million videos, and improvements to Rogue oneTarkin are phenomenal:
Peter Cushing was certainly skinny on paper, but he doesn’t look so haggard anymore.
Instead of ordering YouTube to remove content or send cease and desist, Indiewire now reports Lucasfilm decided to hire Shamook instead to do what they apparently love. “[Industrial Light and Magic is] always looking for talented artists and in fact I have hired the artist who calls himself ‘Shamook’ online, ”said a Lucasfilm representative. IndieWire (via CNET). “For the past few years, ILM has been investing in both machine learning and artificial intelligence as a means of producing compelling visual effects work and it has been fantastic to see momentum building in this space as technology advances.” .
In YouTube comments In a recent video, Shamook says his new title is “Senior Face Capture Artist.”
I’m not sure that Shamook’s results are always better than the originals; many still have that strange mask-like quality that is still common to many deepfakes today, and they don’t have the benefit of all the additional CG lighting work that clearly went into modern Disney movies and shows. But perhaps by combining ideas, they can reach new heights.
Shamook also has a penchant for exchanging stars, famous inserting Harrison Ford into Solo: A Star Wars Story.
