In the excerpt, Heigl tries to clear things up to reveal the real motivations behind his decision to leave.
Speaking of her controversial departure, Heigl revealed that a confluence of things led to her decision to leave, starting when she learned that the network planned to offer pay raises to her co-stars Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh and Isaiah Washington, directing it. to publicly declare that he was not going to renegotiate his contract.

“In this city, women who don’t just yell and say, ‘Okay, yes sir, yes, ma’am’ are starting to get a reputation for being difficult. I decided that it is not worth it for me to be pressured so much, ”she explained.
Things came to a head when Heigl was perceived to be attacking Rhimes and the show’s writers when he pulled himself away from Emmy’s consideration. “I did not feel that I was given the material this season to justify an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from containment,” he said in a Scorched Earth statement.
Looking back, Heigl admits that he didn’t think it was a big deal at the time, but he has come to see why his statement sparked the controversy it sparked.
“I thought I was doing the right thing. And I wanted to make it clear that I was not looking down on the Emmys, “he told the Telegraph. “The night I won was the highlight of my career. He was just afraid that if he said, ‘No comment,’ he would come out as if he couldn’t be bothered. [to enter the race]. He could have said that more gracefully without getting into a private work matter. It was between the writers and me. I ambushed them, and it wasn’t very nice or fair. “
However, Heigl insists that the key reason behind her departure was that she had recently become a new mother. “I started a family and it changed everything,” he said. “It changed my desire to work full time. I went on family leave and just became a [mom], and it changed my whole perspective … that was really the turning point. So before my return, I spoke to Shonda again about my desire to leave. Then I waited at home until they gave me the formal go-ahead that I was off the show. The rumors that I refused to return were totally false. “

According to Heigl, both she and Rhimes worked to find a solution that would work for both Heigl and the show, but were unable to do so.
“[Shonda] I wanted to try to figure out how I could do both [parenting and ‘Grey’s’], and I wanted to do both. There wasn’t a great way to compromise work hours that didn’t negatively affect the crew or the cast. It didn’t feel fair to them or the show to ask them to bend over to my needs, ”Heigl explained.
Meanwhile, two anonymous sources share different accounts of what happened. According to a former ABC executive, Steve McPherson, then the network’s chairman, and Rhimes had become “so fed up with it all, they just said, ‘Get her out.’
However, another source noted: “There were two sides to that story. Katie was beaten for having an opinion, for being successful, for not kissing the ring. He got a lot bigger than Patrick Dempsey, but he didn’t have a penis. “

When all was said and done, Heigl admits that he has some blame for the negative public perception that followed his departure. “The ‘ungrateful’ is what bothers me the most. And that’s my fault, ”he said. “I let myself be perceived that way. A lot of living life, for me, is about humility and gratitude. And I’ve tried so hard to have those qualities and to be that person, and I’m so disappointed in myself that I let it slip away. Of course I am grateful. How can I not be? “
