In the main event, Israel Adesanya put the UFC middleweight championship on the line against Marvin Vettori in a rematch of their 2018 encounter held in the same arena. Adesanya won that first fight by split decision.
Adesanya, who became middleweight champion in October 2019, came off successful defenses against Yoel Romero and Paulo Costa, but suffered his first MMA loss at the hands of light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz at UFC 259. Vettori, meanwhile , had won five consecutive victories. since Adesanya’s loss, including a win over Jack Hermansson in December and Kevin Holland in April.
The co-main event saw Deiveson Figueiredo and Brandon Moreno clash once again for the flyweight title after their Fight of the Year candidate at UFC 256 in December.
Nate Diaz also returned in the main undercard fight, competing for the first time since a loss to Jorge Masvidal at UFC 244. Edwards returned in March, after not competing at all in 2020, going to a no-contest with Belal Muhammad.
The winners of the title fights and Edwards / Diaz are expected to be at the press conference, talking about their victories and what’s next. Losers, if cleared up and allowed, may also show up to discuss where they go from here.
