Iran’s Supreme Leader criticizes US for stalling nuclear talks

Iran’s supreme leader on Wednesday called the United States “ stubborn ” in the stalled nuclear talks in Vienna for discussing missiles and Tehran’s regional influence.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s comments come as his hardline protégé, President-elect Ebrahim Raisi, takes over next week as head of the country’s civilian government and talks on reactivating the deal remain stalled. in Vienna.

While Raisi has said he wants to return to the deal, which saw Iran limit its uranium enrichment in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions, Khamenei apparently called for a more antagonistic approach in his comments. They also appeared to describe the eight-year rule of outgoing President Hassan Rouhani as naive in its approach to reaching the 2015 deal when its officials sat before it.

Others should use your experiences. This experience is a distrust of the West, ” Khamenei said in remarks broadcast on state television. “ In this government, it has been shown that trust in the West does not work. ”

He added: “ Westerners don’t help us, they hit where they can. ”

The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Days earlier, the Biden administration criticized Iran for saying the United States had delayed a possible prisoner swap deal, calling it “ a scandalous effort to deflect blame for the current stalemate. ”

French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Agnes Von Der Muhll also told reporters on Monday that it was “ urgent for Iran to return to the negotiating table. ”

“ Through its actions, Iran continues to exacerbate the nuclear situation, ” he said. “ If it continues on this path, it will not only delay the moment when an agreement can be reached that provides for the lifting of sanctions, but it could jeopardize the very possibility of concluding the Vienna talks and reestablishing the agreement. ”

In his remarks on Wednesday, Khamenei described US negotiators as a verbal promise to lift sanctions, but said that any return to the nuclear deal must “ include a judgment ” on negotiating other issues.

“ By putting this sentence, they want to provide an excuse for their future interventions on the principle of (the agreement) and the missile program and regional issues, ” said the leader. “ If Iran refuses to discuss them, they will say that it has violated the agreement and the agreement ended. ”
