Royal Challengers Bangalore announced on Monday that its Washington Sundar SUV will not be part of the rest of the Indian Premier League (IPL), starting September 19 in the United Arab Emirates, due to a finger injury. RCB will face KKR on September 20 in their first match of the restart of the IPL 2021 season.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) confirmed on Monday that the off-roader Washington Sundar has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a finger injury suffered in England.
Sundar suffered a broken finger during a first-class practice match during India’s ongoing tour of England in July. The 21-year-old was hit on the finger by a Mohammed Siraj goalkeeper while playing for County Select XI against India in the preparation match. He was chosen as one of the India team’s off-road specialists for the 5-test series in England.
Akash Deep, a Bengal state cricketer and net bowler with the franchise, was chosen as a replacement for the off course player.
“The move reiterates RCB’s focus on preparing and nurturing young players as the team continues to develop exceptional talents and create a path for young talents to find their way to IPL and Indian Cricket,” RCB said in a statement.
Washington Sundar has been an integral part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore side, crucial bowling in Powerplays. He has played 42 games in the IPL, collecting 27 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 6.94. The Chennai-born started his IPL career with Rising Pune Supergiant before going to RCB ahead of the 2018 IPL season. RCB bought the SUV at the 2021 IPL auction for a price of Rs 3.2 crore.
Previously, RCB also named Sri Lanka’s highly rated spinner Wanidu Hasaranga as a replacement for Adam Zampa. They also signed Sri Lankan pacemaker Dushmantha Chameera and Singapore all-rounder Tim David for the remainder of the 2021 IPL.
