Hulu: 10 of the best movies to stream tonight

Gone Girl is on Hulu.

20th Century Fox

A hit thriller came to Hulu this week in 2014 Girl is gone, starring a memorable Rosamund Pike. Then came another thriller, this time leaning on the horror side, in 2021. Phobias, starring Jessica Biel. On second thought, this is more of a recommendation for avoid watching the handful of seemingly random scenes from Phobias set in a government testing facility.

Slightly lighter, but not necessarily better, viewing comes on the weekend – Saturday, watch 2012 videos The feeling of guilt, a comedy starring Barbara Streisand and Seth Rogen. Then on Sunday you can watch 2017’s Hostile, a western starring Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike (it will be on your screen a lot this week).

For other options, there is the lauded French love story of 2019. Both of us. For a more traditional display, a couple of Chrisopher Nolan Batman movies they are up next By Chloé Zhao Oscar-winning nomadic country. If you’re looking for more options, check out the list of the best Hulu originals below.

The best original Hulu movies

Comedy

Plan B (2021)

Hulu

This road trip comedy covers familiar territory, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. Kuhoo Verma and Victoria Moroles play strange best friends: One is a heterosexual student, the other is a bum who helps the former track down a Plan B pill in a conservative small town in South Dakota, within 24 hours of an unfortunate first sexual encounter. Following in the footsteps of the fast-paced and fresh Booksmart, Plan B is a nifty, raunchy ride that holds nothing back.

Hulu

Palm Springs fits squarely into the charming indie category – its new sci-fi premise acts as a gateway to exploring deeper ideas. Cristin Miloti and Andy Samberg play Sarah and Nyles, two strangers who meet at a wedding and do all kinds of activities, including stumbling across a Groundhog Day time loop. Their only chance of escape appears to be tied to personal advancement. With extra care about landing, Palm Springs should be on your list of viewing destinations.

Hulu

Big Time Adolescence is a coming-of-age film told with an emphasis on the clutter of growing up. Pete Davidson plays a bum who befriends 16-year-old Mo. Her influence causes Mo to try new things, from alcohol to impressing girls at parties. You learn the lessons you can expect. A clever ensemble, including Jon Cryer, is the icing on the cake that brings together this heartfelt gem.

Romance

Hulu

If you like Christmas movies with a dash of substance, Happiest Season is one of the best new gems to slip onto your Christmas display shelf. Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis play the loving couple Abby and Harper, who find a single key in their relationship: Harper has yet to speak to his conservative family. With all the warmth of a non-cheesy Hallmark card, and bolstered by an all-star supporting cast that includes Aubrey Plaza, Alison Brie, and Dan Levy, Happiest Season is a smart, modern Christmas movie with an emotional twist.

drama

Nomadland (2020)

Courtesy of TIFF

Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland has won awards at film festivals and unsurprisingly won Oscars for best picture, best director and best actress. Zhao is a true workhorse, directing, editing and writing this fascinating and contemplative drama about a woman (Frances McDormand) who leaves her home to travel the American West. Get this: The supporting cast members are real-life nomads who play fictional versions of themselves. See this extraordinary piece from the director who will bring his unique lens to Marvel’s Eternals later this year.

suspense novel

Hulu

Sarah Paulson had a great year, starring in Mrs. America, Ratched and Now Run, an Aneesh Chaganty thriller (check out her excellent directorial debut Searching). In Run, Paulson plays Diane Sherman, a mother who cares for her daughter Chloe (Kiera Allen) in a wheelchair. But their mother-daughter relationship is more unsettling than it sounds. Be captivated by suspense, mystery and horror as Diane takes helicopter parenting to a new level.

horror

Hulu

Like the great Fleabag once said, “Hair is everything.” Bad Hair could take that to the next level. The horror satire set in the ’80s follows a young woman who reluctantly agrees to make herself a weave, but changing her image to please the image-obsessed music industry has its consequences. Absurdly funny and disturbing at the same time, Bad Hair unveils an entertaining fable that reflects on modern life.

Hulu

Zombies, the Australian outback, and a school bus of carefree kids are a mix that you can expect to end badly. Little Monsters follows kindergarten teacher Miss Caroline (Lupita Nyong’o) in her gigantic task: keeping her charges safe and away from meat-eating monsters (and echidna). If she succeeds, she will be the teacher of the year. With a scene-stealing Josh Gad in tow, Little Monsters is ridiculously fun to use a fresh brain to tackle the genre.

Documentary film

Hulu

It was a matter of time before a documentary appeared recounting the remarkable story of teenage climate change activist Greta Thunberg. I Am Greta is an intimate look at Thunberg’s one-man school strike for climate action outside the Swedish parliament. We also get a glimpse of her life as a shy student with Asperger’s. The rare footage is in the safe hands of Swedish director Nathan Grossman, following Thunberg’s galvanizing impact from those steps to the rest of the world.

Hulu

On the surface, this extraordinary documentary by Bing Liu is a love letter to skateboarding. But scratch a bit more and you will find the vast depths of Minding the Gap. A rich and thoughtful history of the young people who grew up in the United States of the 21st century, it explores domestic trauma, systemic racism and classism. It resonates beyond the skatepark.
