How to know which Kindle model you have

Erlo brown

Over the past 14 years, Amazon has released many slightly different Kindles. If you’re stuck wondering if you have a Paperwhite 2, Paperwhite 3, an original Kindle, or anything else, we’ll show you how to tell them apart.

How to find the serial number of your device

The easiest way to find out which Kindle you have is by using its serial number. Each model has its own set of prefixes. (The prefix is the set of letters at the beginning of the serial number). There are two ways to verify it.

Find your Kindle serial number in the device menu

To check the serial number on the device, go to your Kindle’s home page and tap the three little dots in the upper right to open the menu.

Tap “Settings” on the menu.

Kindle menu setting highlighted

Tap “Device Options” on the Settings screen.

Touch “Device Information”.

Under “Serial Number”, you will see the serial number of your Kindle. You are looking for the first character block. You can see “G000PP” in this example, which corresponds to a Kindle Paperwhite 4 (you can compare your prefix on the The table below.).

Note: If you have an older Kindle (or are using an older version of Kindle software), the menus may look slightly different. You are still looking for “Device Information”.

Find Your Kindle Serial Number Through Amazon

If your Kindle won’t turn on, or you can’t find the option in the menu, you can check the serial number on the Amazon website.

Log into your Amazon account through a web browser and go to Manage Devices Page. (You can also use Amazon’s menu system to get there: go to Account & Lists> Content & Devices, and then click on “Devices.”)

kindle page manage devices

Select “Kindle” and then click on the Kindle whose serial number you want to find.

Under “Device Summary” you will see it next to “Serial Number”.

Note: Although “Type” is listed as Kindle Paperwhite (10th generation), we still need the serial number prefix to find out what specific model it is.

How to know which Kindle you have

Once you have your serial number, you can compare your prefix to the following options. This will tell you exactly what device you have. Here is a table that summarizes everything. Below the table, we will go over each model in more detail.
