Greg Schiano, Ryan Day Separate After OSU Fake Punt Up 39

You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who thought Rutgers would walk into Ohio Stadium and hand the Ohio State Buckeyes their first loss of the year. Well guess what, folks: That didn’t even come close to happening, as the Buckeyes defended their home field with a 49-10 victory.

There wasn’t much drama in the game, but during the fourth quarter, there were a few exchanges of banter between the two teams, including the two head coaches. Ohio State faced a 4-2 on their own turf with just under 10 minutes to go, so they decided to send punt Jesse Mirco onto the field. Instead of kicking it, Mirco had an acre of space ahead of him, so he saved it and rushed for 22 yards and a first down.

The Rutgers players were, unsurprisingly, really pissed off. One of them, returner Aron Cruickshank, came up and tackled Mirco after he went out of bounds, sparking some extracurricular activities between the two teams. Greg Schiano ran over to help separate him, but once he was done, he decided to point and yell at Ryan Day, and the two needed to be separated.

The pair were on the Urban Meyer staff in 2017 and 2018, and after the game, it seems they cleared the air between them.

Now, this might not have been a fake punt called from the sidelines, as punters have increasingly done things where they dive in, examine how much space is available, and make the decision to putt or takeoff. plenty of room for Mirco to run, but still, this probably should have just been a punt.
