Free Covid-19 Vaccine From Patent Trap

Published

on

The US decision has also helped convince the Gates Foundation, one of the largest donors to the WHO-GAVI-CEPI initiative, Covax, which aims to bring access to the vaccine to 92 low- and middle-income countries.

Without equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines, even those nations that have achieved broad vaccine coverage within their respective populations will remain at risk. Variants of SARS CoV-2 that could render vaccines ineffective will mean rich nations will be caught in a vaccine redundancy / innovation trap – large unvaccinated populations in poor nations make them more likely to emerge as that circulating strains mutate in immunosuppressed hosts. So the fact that the US joined the WTO call to temporarily renounce IPR protection for vaccines is certainly a big boost for vaccine equity. The US decision comes after months of opposing this: The proposal, led by India and South Africa, was first discussed last year in October. This alone will not be enough to tip the WTO towards exemption; A much broader consensus is needed given that many rich nations and blocs oppose this, but this will certainly have a salutary effect as the United States has invested heavily in deals with pharmaceutical giants to accelerate research, development and supply. commercial vaccine. In fact, the EU, after the US decision, has indicated its willingness to discuss the exemption again, if a concrete proposal is presented, although sufficient caution was also expressed that the IPR exemption is not a “magic bullet” for vaccine equity. The US decision has also helped convince the Gates Foundation, one of the largest donors to the WHO-GAVI-CEPI initiative, Covax, which aims to bring access to the vaccine to 92 low- and middle-income countries.

Currently, of the 1.28 billion doses administered globally, 40% correspond to just five rich nations / blocs, including the US and the EU; Note that this is due to the pre-contracted vaccine supply with major vaccine manufacturers: high-income nations have 4.7 billion of the 8.9 billion confirmed doses purchased globally, and nations low-income only 0.77 billion. As a result of this huge disparity in access, according to Bloomberg Vaccine Tracker, high-income countries get vaccinated almost 25 times faster than low-income countries. And, at the current rate of nearly 20 million doses administered per day (and most of this occurs in high-income countries that have a low overall share of the world’s population), vaccinating the world’s population will take years. Meanwhile, the Covax pipeline, which has increasingly found that its role as a supply window for rich nations runs counter to its mission to provide access to vaccines to the most economically vulnerable people in poor nations, has been suffering due to its dependence on contracted supplies from manufacturers in India. With the second increase in the country and the restriction of vaccine exports, Covax had shipped just 54 million doses in April (or less than a quarter of its target for the month). With the G7 countries expressing their willingness to share a large part of the surplus with them, some of the immediate inequity is expected to be addressed.
However, for more sustained and widespread vaccine coverage, it is imperative to give up intellectual property rights for a few years. Some have argued that there may not be capacity in the developing world that can be diverted to vaccine production so that supplies are scaled up at affordable costs. But that is not a great obstacle; As the example of the yellow fever vaccine production facility in Senegal, or the indigenous vaccine production capabilities of India shows, this is not a huge challenge. The WTO must move as soon as possible so that the production and supply of vaccines are adequate to meet the needs of all countries. It is important to note that “no one is safe until we are all safe.”

Suvendu Adhikari seeks disqualification of Mukul Roy from the house

Published

on

The opposition leader in the Bengal assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, presented a letter to President Biman Banerjee on Friday, requesting the disqualification of Mukul Roy from the house under the anti-desertion law.

Roy, who won this year’s assembly election from Krishnanagar Uttar’s seat on a BJP ballot, joined the ruling Trinamool Congress last week. Previously at TMC, he had joined the BJP in 2017 and was its national vice president.

Spokesman Banerjee did not comment on the letter as he was not in the assembly.

Adhikari had recently met with Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and complained about Roy.

BJP MP Rajya Sabha Swapan Dasgupta said the “law requires” Roy to resign as MLA as he was elected under the BJP symbol. “There was no ambiguity about his defection … Let him go his own way to resign from Rajya Sabha in 2017 before joining the BJP,” he tweeted. Meanwhile, TMC Secretary General of State Kunal Ghosh said the opposition leader should ask his father, Sisir Adhikari who joined the BJP in March, to “resign as a deputy of our party before asking others “.

Google Announces AMD-powered Tau Virtual Machines for the Cloud: Everything You Need to Know

Published

Google has promised eight different configurations of virtual machines

Google Cloud: The tech giant Google has announced a new family of virtual machines called Tau, for which it would use chips provided by AMD. The search engine giant said the system would contain third-generation AMD EPYC processors. The system would offer x86 compatibility, Google added, and would deliver a 42% price-performance increase over standard VMs or virtual machines. The company has said that with this system, Tau VMs would be a significant advance over current virtual machines.

So read | Growth in India: SaaS and cloud will be the main growth engines for Trend Micro

Google has promised eight different configurations of the virtual machines, with a virtual machine having up to 60 vCPUs and a vCPU with a memory of 4 GB. Meanwhile, the network bandwidth can go up to 32 Gbps.

According to Google, these virtual machines would help customers deal with workloads that require more data. The company also touts these virtual machines as offered at relatively lower costs, with costs that vary based on configurations. It should be noted that the system would arrive in the third quarter of this year and the company has opened pre-registration for customers.

The move is expected to impact the virtual machine industry, but it will also affect the chip industry, where things are already getting very competitive.

Intel has long been an industry leader due to its extensive ties with PC and laptop manufacturers. However, Apple took the processor by surprise last year when it announced its move away from Intel for its Mac in favor of its internal M1 chips, just as Apple’s PCs saw growth of a whopping 49% last year. Amid this, AMD has also been looking to expand its customer base, and Google’s use of the chipmaker’s processor in its Tau VMs is likely to boost AMD’s market share.

Deloitte tells staff they can work from home forever

Published

Deloitte

Deloitte has told its 20,000 UK employees that they can work wherever they want when Covid restrictions are lifted as the accounting firm takes a fully flexible approach.

In an email to staff on Friday, Richard Houston, Deloitte’s senior partner and chief executive officer, said he will not force employees to be in the office for a specified number of days or at specific locations.

“That means our people can choose how often they come to the office, if they want to, while focusing on how we can better serve our clients,” he said.

The movement goes beyond your The four great rivals KPMG, EY and PwC, who have said that employees should go to the office at least two or three days a week.

Houston said the pandemic has shown the company can trust its workers to make the right decision in terms of when, how and where they will work, “in balance with their professional and personal responsibilities.”

Deloitte employees will only be able to work from UK locations under the plan, but the company is also considering whether staff could work abroad for a period in the future.

The move comes a day after Downing Street said it was consulting on how to make work flexible. the default option For millions of office workers, it raises fears that urban and urban centers will never regain their pre-crisis dynamism.

A recent internal survey at Deloitte showed that 96% of employees wanted the freedom to choose their work patterns, while more than four in five said they expected to work in the office for up to two days a week.

Accounting firms were quick to outline long-term hybrid roadmaps compared to other industries that have been more reluctant to make concrete decisions.

Comparatively, major investment banks such as Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan have already ordered a significant number of bankers to return to office. Earlier this week, Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman told staff that if they are happy to go to restaurants, they can go back to the office.

Deloitte was also one of several accounting firms that recently closed some of its offices due to reduced demand for space caused by remote work.

Houston said that once the government allows offices to return to full capacity, Deloitte’s office buildings will be used primarily for team collaboration, training and client meetings.

Houston added: “We want to make sure we maintain the flexibility of remote work, without losing the connections and collaboration opportunities we need to make a difference for our clients, our people and society.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to reap the benefits of the past 16 months of being able to spend more time at home, while our people can be flexible in how they work and reconnect with colleagues and the office as needed.”

MPC: Needs both monetary and fiscal steps for recovery

Published

on

The central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is unanimous in its belief that India’s incipient economic recovery must be supported by an accommodative stance, as price pressures reflected in the latest consumer inflation impressions and producers, would be alleviated when temporary supply bottlenecks are removed.

Both monetary and fiscal support, the MPC believes, are necessary to ensure that the lawsuit is not a victim of the pandemic, the minutes of the committee meeting held earlier this month showed.

Consumer inflation exceeded the upper band of the central bank’s tolerance threshold in May. However, the MPC voted in favor of keeping the prevailing repo rate at 4% and continuing a supportive stance, for as long as necessary, to fuel a fragile economic recovery.

Fiscal measures, in addition to monetary support, could help achieve the dual objective of reducing inflation and sustaining demand.

“Active and timely policy measures on the supply side with regard to gasoline and diesel, edible oil and legumes, among others, would be essential to achieve a lasting softening of price pressures,” said the governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Shaktikanta Das at the MPC meeting.

To be sure, bond yields have risen after the RBI’s status quo on official rates despite mounting concerns about inflation.

“Retail inflation is not yet predominantly driven by demand, and accepting the sacrifice of production at this stage may not be the best policy option,” RBI Executive Director Mridul Sagar said at the MPC meeting.

The Indian economy is expected to expand at a slower pace than described above, with the MPC reducing growth projections for FY22 to 9.5% from 10.5%. To cool prices and keep demand resilient, the focus must be on removing supply bottlenecks.

Committee members believe the price increase is due to supply-side constraints brought on by restrictions on mobility and business operations in the wake of the second wave of Covid.

These pressures should ease once economic activity returns to normal, according to the MPC minutes. “The current prevailing view is that global price pressures are temporary and are expected to ease as supply chain disruptions and congestion are overcome,” said Ashima Goyal, external fellow and professor at IGIDR.

The recent initiative by a group of ministers to monitor supplies is seen as a welcome step by the MPC.

“(This) must be accompanied by the proactive actions necessary to prevent the costs of imported inputs from adding to inflationary pressures,” said RBI Deputy Governor Michael Patra.

As more states lift the locks, prices are expected to drop.

“Alleviating price pressures will require a more efficient operation of the commercial and logistics infrastructure, supported by the easing of the movement,” said outside member Shashank Bhide, senior adviser to NCAER.

Vaccination reduces chances of hospitalization by 75-80%, says Center

Published

on

Vaccines have been found to reduce the chances of hospitalization by 75 to 80 percent in studies conducted among healthcare workers, underscoring the role of vaccination in protecting against Covid-19, VK Paul said, NITI Aayog health member and president of the Covid national working group.

Paul said studies have found that the chances of oxygen requirement among vaccinated healthcare workers were only 8 percent and ICU admission was only 6 percent. “Healthcare workers are the most vulnerable during the pandemic. Despite being a high-risk group, studies have shown that vaccines protect and reduce the possibility of serious diseases,” Paul said.

Ensuring that there would be a systematic flow of vaccines into the private sector, Paul said state governments are aggregating information on the spread of private facilities, their demand and ability to absorb the vaccine supply based on which doses will be available.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, 53 percent of all vaccines administered in the last six weeks are in rural areas. “Vaccination will be accelerated with the participation of the state, the center and the private sector,” he said.

According to the new guidelines that will take effect on June 21, states would have to aggregate the demand for private hospitals taking into account the regional balance and the equitable distribution between large and small hospitals.

Referring to the recent serosurvey by the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences and the World Health Organization, Paul said that children have been as affected as adults in the pandemic, although it has been a mild infection. However, he said the public-private sector will work together to ensure that there is enough infrastructure to provide specific treatment for children.

“If the virus mutates and starts to affect growing humans, then we have to be prepared,” Paul said. The AIIMS-WHO study found seroprevalence: prevalence of Covid 3 antibodies in 55.7% of those between 2 and 17 years old and in 63.5% of those in the group over 18 years of age.

Paul also said that even with a high degree of seroprevalence, the situation should not be taken for granted. Previous data have shown a high degree of seropositivity in the population of Brazil and even in Delhi, but the variant caused a large increase in infections in the last wave.

A nearly 85 percent decline in daily new cases has been seen since the highest peak reported on May 6.

A sharp 81 percent decrease in weekly case positivity rate has been observed. It was the highest at 21.6 percent between April 30 and May 6 and dropped to around 4 percent in the last week, according to data from the Health Ministry. The Covid-19 positivity rate is less than 5 percent in 513 districts, he said.
