Durand Cup 2021 | FC Goa enters the quarterfinals with a win over Sudeva Delhi FC

With another victory, FC Goa has advanced to the Durand Cup quarter-finals. A 2-1 victory over Sudeva Delhi FC has confirmed their entry into the round of 16 of the competition. Muhammed Nemil and Jorge Ortiz Mendoza scored the goals for the Goa team. William Pauliankhum scored for Delhi.

FC Goa became the third team to reach the quarterfinals of the 130th Durand Cup Soccer Tournament, after beating Sudeva Delhi FC 2-1, thanks to goals from Muhammed Nemil and Spanish Jorge Ortiz Mendoza , in the Vivekananda Yuba. Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata on Monday. William scored a penalty for Sudeva.

The two sides met in a Group B match and luck couldn’t have been more diverse for the two sides at the end. While Goa held a 100% win record after two games, Sudeva has now dropped both and is off the mark.

The match, which was played again on hard ground conditions and sometimes in heavy rain, had to be completed under the powerful lights of the VYBK in the second half.

There were no clear chances created in the first half of the game, although Sudeva managed to get a couple of half chances. Most of Goa’s moves came from the right flank with Man of the Match Seritón Fernández, Romario Jesuraj and Spaniard Alberto Noguera Ripoll combining well.

Just when the half was thought to end goalless, Nemil unleashed a powerful left-handed curling iron from outside the area in the second and final minute of overtime to comprehensively beat goalkeeper Sachin Jha. It was a tremendous blow and came out of nowhere from a talented young midfielder.

Sudeva started the second half with her front foot and was determined to equalize. They created two chances in the first 10 minutes, but couldn’t convert.

Coach Chencho Dorji affected the changes for Sudeva in search of a draw, but the Delhi team suffered another setback as they lost starting goalkeeper Sachin through injury.

FC Goa, on the other hand, was going from strength to strength. In the 63rd minute, Ripoll missed a relatively simple one-on-one with Sudeva’s replacement goalkeeper Legend Singh and hit him straight.

That would be his last contribution to the match, since a minute later the Goa Juan Ferrando Fenoll affected a triple change by incorporating the Spanish Ripoll Edu Bedia and Jorge Ortiz Mendoza along with Brison Fernandes to replace him in addition to Glan Martins and the striker Nemil.

The change worked as Ortiz scored the second for Goa in the 80th minute with a shot from outside the box that passed Legend, hitting the bottom of the crossbar and landing inside before exiting.

Sudeva did find consolation very late in injury time when William Pauliankhum converted a penalty thanks to a foul by Edu Bedia in the penalty area, but it was too late.
