Biden likely got sick from Omicron’s BA.5 subvariant, White House says

WASHINGTON — The White House confirmed Saturday that the strain of coronavirus that infected President Biden several days ago was likely to have been BA.5, the highly contagious Omicron subvariant that now comprises the majority of new infections in the United States.

“The causal agent of the president is probably the BA.5 variant”, Said a Saturday morning letter from the president’s personal physician, Dr. Kevin C. O’Connor, who has offered regular updates since the White House confirmed the president’s positive test on Thursday. He added that the confirmation, which came from preliminary genetic sequencing, “does not affect the treatment plan in any way.”

BA.5 now Accounts for eight out of 10 new coronavirus cases in the United Statesand while it doesn’t make people sicker than earlier variants, it spreads quickly and evades immune protection from previous infections and vaccines.

Biden is fully vaccinated and received two booster shots — a reminder, the White House has been at pains to point out, that inoculation remains exceptionally effective in preventing serious illness.

The president is also taking Paxlovid, a treatment that further reduces the chance of serious or critical illness. And he will continue to use “low-dose aspirin as an alternative type of blood thinner,” since he was forced to stop while taking Paxlovid, the prescription heart medication you had been taking. President who suffered from asthma when he was younger, he is also using an albuterol inhaler “as needed” for coughing.

“Your symptoms continue to improve,” O’Connor’s letter said, describing those symptoms as sore throat, runny nose, cough and body aches. The president remains isolated in the White House, after canceling travel plans. And he continues to work, despite the fact that most medical experts say that it is necessary to rest when he suffers from COVID-19.

O’Connor said Biden is “not experiencing shortness of breath,” encouraging another sign that the combination of full vaccination and Paxlovid treatment is having the desired effect.

on Friday, Biden held a Zoom call with his economic advisers, assuring his audience, which included reporters, that they shouldn’t do anything about his raspy voice. “I feel much better than I sound,” the president joked.

The next morning, the coronavirus was still affecting his vocal cords.

“His voice is still deep,” O’Connor wrote on Saturday.
