Apple Watch 7: release date, new features, and when the heck can you buy one

Apple / Screenshot by Scott Stein / CNET

This story is part of Apple event, our full coverage of the latest Apple news.

The Apple Watch Series 7 starts at $ 399 and will arrive later in the fall. It was announced in The Apple event on Tuesday. But the changes don’t seem so dramatic. It has a larger screen with slimmer bezels, a faster-charging battery that promises 8 hours of use after 8 minutes of charging, and a more crack-resistant front glass. But the battery life, 18 hours, is the same as last year’s watch.

There are also new colors for the aluminum housing: blue, green, midnight (black), starlight (a mix of gold and silver) and product red. You can also add more expensive upgrades to the steel and titanium cased versions.

Apple Watch Series 7: this is what’s new

5:40

It seems that Apple is keeping the course of the rest of the watch design, as opposed to previous reports of a massively renovated flat design. For anyone hoping for a brand new watch (like me), the seemingly minor updates seem like a disappointment. But Apple has made small changes year over year to previous Apple Watches. The only thing truly new about last year Apple Watch Series 6 was the addition of estimated blood oxygen.

This year, the updates seem sparse too, and it doesn’t look that different from a casual distance. The promises of longer durability and faster charging seem helpful, though probably not enough for most to consider an upgrade from a recent model.

A bigger screen

The larger screen should allow for more readable and detailed watch faces, notifications and apps, just like the Series 4 Increase in size A few years ago. Apple says it is 20% larger than Series 6 and 50% larger than Series 3. The buttons are larger on the screens, and Apple says 50% more text can be placed on the screen, while the screen is 70% brighter indoors. always active mode. (A new full on-screen keyboard will appear for entering text, in addition to scribbling and dictation options.)

The screen is now curved at the corners, wrapping the case a bit. I haven’t seen this in person yet, but I did look at a 3D model in AR and it shows the subtle effect from the side.

There are also new watch faces: a revamped modular watch face and a watch face that warps the numbers with its digits around the curved edge. But still no way to get new watch faces on a watch face shop, although Apple watch faces have many customization options.

Longer durability promises

The Watch 7 has an IP6X rating, which is new and promises better dust resistance. The curved glass is also 50% thicker, according to Apple, which could lead to fewer cracks. But we haven’t tested it yet, and we still don’t know how durable it actually is (and we won’t know until later this fall, when the watch arrives). The watch has the same 50 meter water resistance for swimming in fresh water, pool or sea as recent previous models.

Faster charging, but not better battery life

Apple is touting the fast-charging features on the Watch 7, which promise 8 hours of battery life on an 8-minute charge. That’s useful, especially when you may have forgotten to charge the watch the night before (or for people who wear the Apple Watch to bed to monitor sleep), but the overall battery life of the watch remains the same. I wait a day and a half of use, based on my previous experience.

No new health features

However, new features or health sensors are missing. Recent from Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and last year Fitbit Sense started introducing new health sensors like body analysis and electrodermal activity, but Apple hasn’t introduced anything new to the Series 7 when it comes to health compared to last year. Also absent is any improvement in battery life or a watch face shop.

Price levels to be determined

The Apple Watch Series 7 starts at $ 399, but we don’t know the prices of the different sizes, LTE-ready models, or different materials. However, expect prices to rise like previous Apple watches.

WatchOS 8 arrives before the Apple Watch Series 7

From Apple new version of WatchOS It should be here on September 20, adding new cycling features, a redesigned Mindfulness app, and updates to the Wallet app. Maybe those updates are enough for current Apple Watch owners, and they won’t see a need to update their watches at all.

Apple’s line of watches has become increasingly successful, especially as wearable device competitors have established themselves. From Apple Fitness Plus subscription service, released late last year, requires the watch to take advantage of your workouts on video. Apple announced a new group training function at today’s event as well.

Last years Apple Watch SE It sought to become a more affordable Apple Watch, but its starting price of $ 279 was still well above budget fitness trackers from companies like Fitbit. This year, the Watch SE and Series 3 are still on sale, with the SE still at $ 279 (£ 269, AU $ 429) and the Series 3 at $ 199 (£ 199, AU $ 299). International pricing for the Series 7 was not announced.
