Adani Ports & SEZ Rating: Purchase numbers were below expectations

Published

on

Our assumptions take into account some market share gains and margins of 68-73% in FY22E-25e. Management is preparing for margins of 80% for fiscal year 25e.

EBITDA for the fourth quarter of fiscal 21 is 17% below expectations given the lower margins, but should recover as volumes increase and the April 2021 price hike is reflected in fiscal year 22e. We believe 3 drivers will re-rate the stocks from current levels: (i) Market share will increase from 21% to 32% with recent acquisitions for fiscal year 25e; (ii) ROE back to 20% with asset sweating; (iii) greater drop in promoters’ promises. Our revised DCF-based PT of Rs 910 (v / s Rs 670) reflects a 13% PAT improvement in FY23e and a higher implied multiple.

The Gangavaram (GPL) acquisition adds 6% to FY 23e Ebitda: Adani Ports will shell out Rs 56bn for an 89.6% stake in GPL – 9.2x FY21 EV / Ebitda vs Adani Port’s 23.2x. The port is a net cash asset. The port of Mundra gained JNPT’s market share amid service efficiency, shorter distance inland and JNPT’s capacity limitations. Mundra’s container cargo market share increased to 49% in fiscal 20 from just 15% in fiscal 2007 within the JNPT, Mundra and Pipavav sector. We assume that GPL’s share will increase to 42% for FY25e from 32% in FY2020 at the pie of Gangavaram and Vishakapatnam ports. The increased service levels of the Adani group and the ability to give liner ships the benefit of docking in their different ports should drive this.

Krishnapatnam continues to focus on inland expansion: KPCL represents 13% and 14% of consolidated revenue and Ebitda and 40 million annually based on 227 million from fiscal year 21 ex KPCL. Margins increased to 71% in the fourth quarter from 55% since fiscal year 20, when discussions about the acquisition began. The port of Chennai, Machillipatnam and Kakinada are key ports around KPCL, with combined volumes of around 70 mnt. Our assumptions take into account some market share gains and margins of 68-73% in fiscal year 22E-25e. Management is preparing for margins of 80% for fiscal year 25e.

Considering some lower margins in FY22E: Lower margins in Q4FY21 led to disappointing margins in FY21 at 170 bps at 63.6%. Acquisition-related costs and some residual expenses likely led to lower margins in the fourth quarter. Therefore, we have reduced our margin assumptions for fiscal year 22e by just 40 bps to 64.9% and lowered Ebitda for fiscal year 22e by 3%.

Promoter pledges to reduce to 16% stake from 45% in November 2020: Adani promoters have drastically reduced promises after selling their 20% stake in Adani Green. Management’s commitment is to further reduce this to negligible levels. Our DCF-based PT of Rs 910 implies 16.6x EV / Ebitda FY23e, which is the average of the 10-year trading band. Mgmt was clear that if its Myanmar port project falls within the scope of the sanction, it will abandon it.

The judicious use of B / S plays out on growth: PAT should increase 2.4x in FY20-25E (13% CAGR FY20-22e): APSEZ is a good combination of geographic and freight diversification. We believe ROE should return to 20% by fiscal 25e (19% in fiscal 20, 16-17% in fiscal 21-22e) with a CAGR of 16%, higher pay and sweating of the ports acquired. Operational soundness in prices and work with ocean liners to dock at Adani ports could lead to an upward volume surprise. The 10% volume change is the 13% change in FY23e EPS.

To Roth or not to Roth? Part ii

Published

on

I have some advice for those of you who would dare to question the conventional wisdom about Roth conversions to your 401 (k) s or IRAs:

Be prepared for a significant setback.

You should know, because I dedicated last week’s column to questioning that conventional wisdom. I reported on extensive research that found that while Roth conversions often work in the end, it takes a lot longer than most realize to get that benefit, and in any case, the benefit is usually quite small.

The indefinite was carried out by Edward McQuarrie, professor emeritus at the Leavey School of Business at the University of Santa Clara. Fully aware that his findings will reduce this setback, he goes public with the indefinite in which he incorporates the myriad of factors that are relevant to determining whether a conversion makes sense. In an interview, he said: “In fact, you may be among the lucky few who will receive a large and fast payment from a Roth conversion, as opposed to the slow and small payment that I found to be the norm. But you owe it to yourself. test it with a spreadsheet. “

In this column I reply to a series of emails I received after last week’s column. In each case, I reached out to McQuarrie for his ideas, which are included below.

“The study does not mention a potential benefit of a Roth conversion: Reducing the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) on the portion of retirement funds left in a traditional IRA. A few years ago (when income tax rates were actually higher), I gradually converted about half of my retirement portfolio to Roths. As a result, my RMD is quite low annually. “

McQuarrie’s answer: Lowering RMD is a common motivation for Roth conversions. But it is not clear that it will be better for having done it. Although I cannot know your specific situation, there is a good chance that you paid a tax rate of 28% on your conversions, in exchange for reducing RMDs that would otherwise have been taxed to 22%. If so, it will take decades for your conversion to break even in terms of net present value. Please see the spreadsheet I provide on my website to know how to do the calculation. As you’ll see from that spreadsheet, for couples married in 2021, total income (RMD plus Social Security plus other income) must exceed $ 200,000 to be taxed at a rate greater than 22%. That’s a big hurdle, and it increases every year as tax brackets adjust for inflation.

“I use my Roth as a kind of trust fund for my daughter, who is now 40 years old. Due to the change in tax law, she will have to collect it within 10 years of my death, but she will never pay income taxes, as she would with a traditional inherited IRA. That will likely save you a lot more than the tax I paid for the conversions. “

McQuarrie’s answer: I’m not sure you’ve taken time value for money into account here. Let’s say your daughter inherits in 20 years and the traditional IRA in her hands would have been taxed at roughly the rate she paid for the conversion. Instead, he chose to pass the tax-reduced post-conversion amount on his Roth account to his daughter, who will not pay taxes on it or the subsequent appreciation. But it also transfers the future (negative) value of the tax you paid to convert, which would have remained in the traditional IRA to appreciate. You will probably be better off, Roth conversions always pay off over several decades with roughly constant tax rates. But I challenge you to show on a spreadsheet that the conversion will save you “a lot more than the tax I paid,” in terms of net present value.

“You didn’t mention the time in life when many people would benefit from a Roth conversion. I recently retired, I have a small pension, I am not taking Social Security yet, and I am about seven years away from RMD. But I have a good IRA. When those RMDs roll in, I will face a huge tax bill plus much higher Medicare premiums. For the next several years, it seems that a Roth conversion every year would be a wise move. I will pay taxes on the converted amount at a much lower rate than I will pay in RMD. “

Response from McQuarrie: Your age and situation were the exact focus of my article. Let’s be specific about your “good IRA account.” If you are single, is it more than $ 1.2 million ($ 2.4 million if married)? Otherwise, projecting seven years forward, you won’t have to pay even the first tier of Medicare surcharges, and you’ll only be in the 22% tax bracket, which I don’t consider “huge.” However, if you can convert today within the 12% range, whose upper income limit is roughly $ 52,000 for a single taxpayer, then in fact a Roth conversion will pay off in not too many years. That $ 52,000 conversion will reduce your first year RMD by approximately $ 2,500, saving you more than $ 500 in income taxes at a rate of 22%, and these savings will continue for years to come as well. But what funds would it live on during that year it was converted? If you have any taxable income (for example, your pension), then you won’t be able to convert as much as $ 52,000, which means you’ll save less than $ 500 in income taxes.

His article on the Roth conversion missed an important topic: A traditional retirement IRA distribution can make more of your Social Security benefits taxable, resulting in a 12% rate that is actually more like 20%. On the other hand, a Roth does not cause more than your Social Security payments to be taxed. This can benefit lower-income taxpayers more than it seems when the topic of Social Security taxes is overlooked.

McQuarrie’s Response: You have a good point: Your effective tax rate in retirement will be higher if your income increases enough to make some of your social security benefits taxable. If you can do a Roth conversion today at 12%, to save more than 20%, of course it will pay off, and relatively soon. However, what funds will you use to live through the conversion year? Every dollar of taxable income reduces the amount you can convert by 12%. And can you convert enough at 12% to make a difference? (To get even a $ 1,000 reduction in your first year RMD, it will take about $ 18,000 to convert at age 65.)

What is the end result that I extract from this discussion? The wisdom of a Roth conversion, or lack thereof, is not something you can discover on your own using simple rules. You need to run the numbers. Be my guest.

UP BJP leaders and party chief discuss organizational matters

Published

on

UP BJP organization secretary general Sunil Bansal and state president Swantantra Dev Singh held discussions with party chief JP Nadda on Thursday on strengthening the organization to expand the work of state government, with assembly elections just a few months away. They also discussed the demands of the alliance partners and certain communities that have demanded representation in the UP ministry.

A senior leader said Prime Minister Yogi Adityanath was not in favor of changes to his team, as the ministers were selected after considering geographic and caste equations. “The CM feels that eliminating any minister just seven months before the polls can leave sections that they represent bitter,” said an official. The general secretary of the BJP organization, BL Santhosh, is scheduled to visit Lucknow next week, the second in fifteen days, to follow up on the deliberations.

“The party has yet to name the people who will lead the yuva and mahila morcha. They play an important role in the courtship of young men and women. All vacancies in commissions and morchas will be filled in the next few days, “said a senior leader, adding that the leaders were seeking elections for various positions in zila panchayats, including the presidential election to be held on July 3.” Many decisions regarding organizational changes will be made after that. ”There was also the possibility of incorporating UP ministers, particularly from the Dalit community, into the Union Cabinet.

RLD’s Jayant Chaudhary ‘understanding’ with the Samajwadi Party and farmer protests led by Rakesh Tikait has made it imperative that the party have a state-level leader from the Jat community. “We have Sanjiv Baliyan and Satya Pal Singh, but they are at the national level. Since the OBC commission does not include Jats, the community must be courted. Talks with RLD are not off, but the party wants to set its own terms so that it is not blown up after the elections. We have other communities supporting us in many districts of western UP. As of now, our intent is only to quell any anger related to Covid-19, ”said the party official.

Bansal had said on Wednesday that the BJP would contest the 2022 assembly elections on the achievements of its governments in the state and the Center and had asked the cadre to highlight government initiatives, in particular the vaccination campaign. Ministers given specific responsibilities for districts affected by Covid-19 have also been asked to communicate with families, while district magistrates have been asked to renovate government schools, the hospitals and panchayat bhawans to showcase the work of the state government.

Kumbh Fake Evidence: Trivendra Singh Rawat Seeks Investigation By HC Judge

Published

on

In response to Prime Minister Tirath Singh Rawat’s statement that the “bogus” Covid tests during Kumbh Mela did not occur during his tenure, former CM Trivendra Singh Rawat said timing is not important, but that the accusation that it is issued false reports must be thoroughly investigated Those involved must be searched for attempted murder. It also demanded an investigation by a sitting superior court judge.

“It doesn’t matter much if the subject is old or not. What matters is how the reports were prepared without evidence, and there should be a thorough investigation into the matter, ”the former CM told ET on Friday at his local office in the Nehru Nagar area of Dehradun. “Since the matter has taken on a political color, it should be investigated by an acting superior court judge. A judicial investigation will give more credibility to the investigation. ”

Rawat said this should not be treated as a simple economic crime, as it occurred during the pandemic and can have wide ramifications. Given the seriousness of the crime, those involved should be registered for attempted murder, he said, noting that the negative reports allowed people to move freely during Kumbh Mela.

It welcomed the sample ordered by the CM and demanded an independent investigation and within a certain time so that there is no policy in this regard. He underscored the need for an investigation by a competent and credible agency, saying that a judicial investigation is desirable in this case.

On his abrupt departure as CM in March this year, Rawat said he was grateful to the party for making him a CM for four years and that he resigned after the message from the high command that he wanted to make another CM. “I did my best to work transparently and adopted a zero tolerance policy against corruption. I worked tirelessly without rest, ”he said.

Speaking about his achievements, Rawat said that he worked on rural connectivity, giving electricity to all houses and providing medical coverage to the 2.3 million families in the state under the Atal Ayushman scheme.

Rawat also defended his decision to establish the Devasthanam Board trust for the management of some 50 temples, including Kedarnath and Badrinath, despite opposition from priests and a section of the locals. He said that he had planned the trust in the trust lines for the temples of Vashno Devi, Sai Baba and Tirupati Balaji.

On his possible new role in the party organization, the former prime minister said he would do whatever his party decides for him. He recently visited Delhi and met with various BJP leaders.

Impact of the pandemic: decoding the GDP FY21

Published

on

A more detailed analysis of nominal GDP highlights changes in three essential components.

By TV Mohandas Pai and Nisha Holla

As a result of the pandemic, most analysts believed that the economy would contract between 8% and 10% in real terms due to the total and partial blockage in the first and second quarters of fiscal year 21, respectively. However, as growth accelerated in the second quarter, some revised it up to a 7.5% decline. Preliminary estimates show a 7.3% contraction, from real GDP of Rs 145.7 million in FY20 to Rs 135.1 million in FY21. In nominal terms, GDP declined from 203 Rs 5 crore in fiscal year 20 to Rs 197.5 crore lakh in fiscal year 21, a contraction of 3%. Nominal GDP per capita plummeted 4%, from Rs 1.52 lakh in FY20 to Rs.146 lakhs in FY21. Analyzing the budget in nominal terms gives a better indication of what happened, since which reflects the prices that people experience and transact with today.

A close look at the breakThe decline in nominal GDP highlights changes in three essential components:

– Private Final Consumption Expenditure (PFCE) decreased from Rs 123.1 million lakh (to 60.5% of GDP) in FY20 to Rs 115.7 million (to 58.6% of GDP) in fiscal year 21 as consumption declined due to the lockdown in fiscal year 21. This decrease in PFCE is crucial as the growth of the Indian economy is highly dependent on domestic consumption.

– Government Final Consumption Expenditure (GFCE) increased from Rs 22.9 million lakh crore (to 11.2% of GDP) in fiscal year 20 to Rs 24.7 million lakh crore (to 12.5% of GDP) in fiscal year 21. This equates to an increase of Rs 1.8 lakh crore – less than the increase of Rs 2.5 lakh crore between FY19 and FY20. It is necessary to examine the precise impact of the (higher) public spending in fiscal year 21.

– Gross fixed capital formation (GFCF), which represents the aggregate capital investment in the country, also decreased from Rs 58.5 lakh crore (to 28.8% of GDP) in fiscal year 20 to Rs 53.5 lakh crore (to 27.1% of GDP) in fiscal year 21.

Both private consumption and capital investment decreased due to the closing in the first and second quarters of fiscal year 21.

A closer look at the composition of nominal GVA reveals which sectors were most affected by the lockdown in fiscal year 21. Agriculture is the only sector that posted positive growth of 6.5%, down from Rs 33.9 lakh crore in FY20 to Rs 36.2 lakh crore in FY21. This is a direct result of keeping the rural economy open during the first wave, allowing farmers to harvest the record rabi crop, plant and harvest the kharif crop, and benefit from various schemes, including PM-KISAN.

Manufacturing declined by 4.6%, from Rs 27.1 lakh crore in FY20 to Rs 25.9 lakh crore, a direct consequence of the closure of factories and a dramatic reduction in trade. SwindleConstruction fell by 6.4%, from Rs 13.7 lakh crore in FY20 to Rs 12.8 lakh crore in FY21, leading to higher unemployment. The pandemic also directly affected retail, hospitality and travel, as evidenced by the steep 15.5% drop in GVA. of the services subsector made up of Commerce, Hotels, Transportation and Communicationsions: from Rs 34.8 lakh crore in FY20 to Rs 29.4 lakh crore in FY21. This subsector was one of the main victims of the lockdowns, resulting in massive job losses. scale; is yet to recover.

Another important services subsector is financial, real estate and professional services, which grew marginally by 1%. because, in general, this subsector grows at 7% + and the 6% + growth difference is a significant loss. Lastly, net taxes decreased by just 3%, indicating that the taxpaying sector was not unduly affected by the pandemic and the shutdown.

Analysis of quarterly nominal GDP growth shows that the economy was gaining momentum after the lockdown in the first quarter and partially in the second quarter of fiscal 2020. The accompanying graph shows the quarterly GDP for the last three years. Q1FY20 GDP grew by 9.6% during Q1FY19, the highest growth percentage change compared to the other three quarters, indicating that Q1FY21 growth would have accelerated as well, had it not been for the pandemic and the national shutdown. The first quarter of fiscal year 21, on the other hand, registered a decrease of 22.3% compared to the first quarter of 2020.

The decline slowed significantly in the second quarter, at -4.4% compared to the second quarter of fiscal 2020, as locks eased and businessnests and manufacturing were back online. As a result, Q3FY21 entered full swing, registering a growth of 5.2% during Q3FY20, considerably close to the 6.5% of the Q3FY20 registered during Q3FY19. The momentum allowed Q4FY21 to reach 8.7% compared to Q4FY20, the same as the percentage change of Q4FY20 compared to Q4FY19. The year-end momentum is corroborated by the all-time highest GST collections of Rs 1.41 lakh crore in April 2021 for sales in March 2021. Similarly, the corporate sector, which saw a decline in Revenue in the first quarter of fiscal 21, rebounded to record all-high earnings over time in the second quarter, once again in the third quarter, topping this in the fourth quarter.

The Indian economy was heading back towards the second half of FY21 and robust estimates were made for economic growth in FY22. Estimates of real GDP growth were in the range of 10-12.5%, which which translates to 14-16.5% in nominal terms to include inflation. However, Due to the second wave and local lockdowns, the first quarter of fiscal 22 will again post a down quarter, and the second quarter will see some recovery with a gradual unlock. Growth estimates have now been lowered to 7.5-10%. Quarterly GDP estimates, sectoral GVA breakdown, and consumption and capital investment trends show the main levers of the economy.

The high growth requirement of Fiscal Year 22, with substantial job creation to counter large-scale job losses caused by the pandemic, can be met by focusing on these. However, much relies on urgent government stimulus to boost consumption, manufacturing, construction, and job creation. A monetary stimulus will no longer be effective; A fiscal package is the only way to ensure that fiscal year 22 shows healthy growth.
