About behavior change, health and age – Healthcare Economist

A. Health matters article (May 2021) discusses the potential benefits of the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP). MDPP aims to reduce the patient’s weight and prevent the patient from becoming diabetic. Commenting on his Medicare clients enrolled in the program, one instructor noted:

“I’ve seen a lot of Medicare people do this program really well because they have more time than young people working or raising kids,” he said. “But Medicare folks may find it harder to make [lifestyle] change because they’ve been doing things the same way for a long time.”

MDPP is the first Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (aka, CMMI; aka, CMS Innovation Center) demonstration of a preventive care model that is extended to programs available to al Medicare recipients. However, the absorption of the program is poor; only 3,600 Medicare beneficiaries nationwide have taken advantage of MDPP benefits.
