ATHENS, Greece (AP) – A fire broke out at a soon-to-close migrant camp on the Greek island of Samos on Sunday night, forcing it to be evacuated. No injuries or major damage were reported.
Authorities said the fire started in some abandoned buildings within the camp and had been brought under control. Evacuation of the 550 migrants to an empty lot near the entrance to the camp was underway.
Ten unaccompanied minors were to be transferred overnight to a new facility on the island. The transfer of all migrants to the new 43 million euro ($ 50 million) facility was scheduled to begin Monday and be completed on Wednesday.
The existing camp once housed up to 7,500 migrants in squalid conditions, as Migration and Asylum Minister Notis Mitarakis admitted on Saturday when he opened the new camp.
